Liver Health
We check liver enzymes (AST and ALT) for all of our patients. While the reference ranges for these tests have increased over time, ideal values for both of these enzymes are around 25 or less.
The most common causes of elevated AST/ALT, indicating liver cell damage, are:
- Fat deposits in the liver from excess body fat being stored there
- Alcohol use/overuse
- Medications like tylenol or other herbal supplements
-Liver infections like hepatitis
At Longevity Maine, we often use the FibroScan to look directly at the liver and determine if there is excess liver fat or scarring, which can then be used to determine the optimal course of treatment.
